The Value of Rest
A musical rest is a pause where specific musicians play nothing. Rests are an important part of the music. Music is a constant pulse of the beat and the melody — a rest in the music indicates a period of intentional and meaningful pause.
When listening to music, most people do not notice the intentional moments of silence. The senses are more focused on the things happening in the music — such as the lyrics, the beat or the melody. But, silence is just as important as sound. Silence provides relief and builds anticipation. Without rest at specific and appropriate times, music would lose its quality and meaning.
During a rest, it is important for the musician to remember: prepare your mind, your heart, and your body to play the next measure. Don’t let your mind wander, don’t take your hands off of the instrument. Keep your mind alert and your hands on the keys. Be ready to play whatever follows the rest.
Every pastor and ministry leader must understand that the beat and melody of our life is constant. While the music of our life continues, there must be intentional, appropriate, and meaningful times of rest.
Jesus told His disciples, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.”
